Hillcrest, NY

Hillcrest is a hamlet in the town of Ramapo, Rockland County, New York, United States, incorporated in 1893 and a census-designated place. It is located north of Spring Valley, east of Viola, west of New City and south of New Square and New Hempstead. The population at the 2010 census was 7,558. It is a New York City residential suburb, as many people commute to Manhattan (and, to a lesser degree, northern New Jersey) by bus (Red and Tan Lines), train (Metro-North Railroad), or car. It is mainly served by the post office at Spring Valley.

Throughout the early 1900s, Hillcrest became a New York City summer resort for working-class families; the families were able to reach Hillcrest by rail from New Jersey (after ferrying across to Hudson’s western shore). The Tappan Zee Bridge opened in 1955 (connecting Tarrytown in Westchester County with Nyack in Rockland County), growing traffic into the region, and making it easier for the local population to enter New York City. In the 1950s through the 1970s, Hillcrest became, along with many other communities in the Lower Hudson Valley, a destination for White Flight from New York City. Craig H. Long, the historian of the Town of Ramapo, said that after the opening of the Tappan Zee many secular Jews were part of the first wave of settlers into Hillcrest. In the 1960s, Hillcrest gained Jews from New York City’s Brooklyn and The Bronx boroughs; Jews moving to Hillcrest desired affordable starter homes, a fast commute, and a suburban environment.

The CDP has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of the land, according to the United States Census Bureau. Hillcrest lies on the eastern edge of the town of Ramapo, approximately midway between the town of Haverstraw to the north and the southern border of New Jersey (Bergen County). Hillcrest is bounded to the north by the villages of New Hempstead and New Square, to the south by the village of Spring Valley and an unincorporated section of the town of Ramapo, to the east by an unincorporated area of the town of Clarkstown and to the west by the villages of New Hempstead and Viola.
