The Waoranek, a Lenape group, inhabited the Newburgh region at the time of European contact. The region that became Newburgh was first visited by Europeans when Henry Hudson stopped during his journey to the river that now bears his name in 1609. A navigator, Robert Juet, is known to have named the site “a pleasant place to build a town,” whereas other earlier scholars claim that he may have simply referred to the area where Cornwall-on-Hudson is now located. The Provincial Governor Thomas Dongan bought the land from the Woaranek people around 1683. Fifty-four Palatine refugees made the first settlement in the Spring of 1709, supported by Queen Anne of Great Britain. The inhabitants called it by Quassic as the Palatine Parish.
