Dumbo, is an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass or Down Under the Manhattan and Brooklyn Overpasses, is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. It includes 2 areas: one situated between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges that connects Brooklyn to Manhattan just across the East River, and also the other one that continues east from the Manhattan Bridge to the Vinegar Hill area.
Stroll over the latter without spending time on the Brooklyn side, as well as it’s like you’ve paid the complete fare for half a ride. The once-industrial area has all the makings of a breathtaking day trip: awesome sights of Manhattan worth flaunting about on social media, theatre you will not see anywhere else, and dining establishments and bars beloved by locals.
Aside from the haunts and public spaces, the area hosts incredible events. Under the Manhattan Bridge, the Dumbo Business Improvement District hosts community gatherings consisting of rowdy Oktoberfest party as well as weekend flea markets. Speaking of markets, Time Out Market New York, a marketplace-style dining experience of its very own, has landed in Dumbo. A delight on meals from a few of the leading chefs in the city, order drinks from the venue’s various bars, and catch some excellent entertainment.
You can fill an afternoon shopping at the many boutiques or dropping by a gallery. In the spring through the fall, the famous Brooklyn Flea is housed under the arches of the Manhattan Bridge on Sundays. After you have gotten your vintage or artisanal merchandise and are inspired to make your crafts, take a craft workshop at the Etsy Labs or stroll through the cobblestone streets as well as browse the many shops in the area.
Dumbo is a really good location to wander around after crossing the Brooklyn bridge. Some great photo ops of manhattan bridge from Washington street and of the skyline from the waterfront. Make sure when you visit here your camera battery is charged and ready to go!
